Karen and I have now been living in Japan for three years. When we decided to move here we thought it would be an adventure, and it has been. We’ve had some problems, we’ve had some fun, and we’ve had lots of fun-problem combinations. I think we made the right choice.

Have you had to learn Japanese now? I’d like to go to japan sometime its meant to be really different and interesting :)
Definitely go. But take advantage of your friendly local contacts. Taking full advantage of Japan requires a guide.
We didn’t have to learn Japanese, but it was the sensible thing to do. I know enough to handle daily life, but it will be another few years before I can talk about anything meaningful.
It is different: Karen said it was the most alien place she’d ever been. Over the last three years it’s become home, but it still remains interesting.
Yes, a guide really helps. Travel books are great to tell you where to go and what to see, but it’s hard for a book to explain some of the subtle fun.
That’s good news – I’m glad you don’t regret it!
I can’t believe it’s been 3 years… and a bit… The leaving curry doesn’t seem very long ago.
